James Wedge studied at Walthamstow School of Art prior to being given a scholarship to the Royal College of Art. After leaving college he set up as a milliner, beginning by designing collections for the couturier Ronald Paterson, he was also asked to sell his creations through Liberty, Fortnum & Mason and Harrods. During this time he excelled as London's leading milliner; his hats graced the front covers of Vogue, Harpers,Queen and other magazines. James designed hats for films such as 'Blow Up' , and several celebrities wore his hats .The V&A now house a collection of James Wedge hats.
The late 60's brought a change for James, leaving his hats behind him and moving on to a new venture in London's trendy Kings Road .This was the ideal location for James to launch two fashionable boutiques; 'Countdown' and 'Top Gear' here young rock stars and their girlfriends flocked to buy imaginative and stylish clothes, clients included the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Marianne Faithful and other followers of fashion.
During the 70's James entered the world of fashion photography, and with many high profile commissions he became quickly established and worked for all the glossy magazines amongst them Nova , Vogue, "19" and The Sunday Times Magazine. James' own personal work has been exhibited throughout Europe and New York.
The 90's saw the arrival of his real passion, Painting. All through his varied and creative life James' work in fashion and photography has been an inspiration and an influence on his treatment of the human figure that can be recognized in his paintings.
James' works are in oil on canvas, they are vibrant images using the paint to project sensations of movement and space expressing the human form.
James feels at last he has total artistic freedom.
